Sherwood Forest visitor centre closes to make way for new building

The new centre at the forest in Edwinstowe is set to be opening in the third week of August and is an joint venture between Nottinghamshire County Council and the RSPB.

An RSPB spokeswoman: “Moving staff and equipment to their new home and undergoing training all takes time, and we ask for your patience as there will be unavoidable changes to normal service.

“There will still be access to the toilets, and refreshments will be available throughout the transition period.

“Some restricted access to pathways directly around the closed visitor centre. These will be clearly signed.”

Parking will continue at the current car park until August 13, and also in the new visitor centre car park off Swinecote Road throughout this period.

After August 13 car park off Swinecote Road will be the main car park.

There will be no charges for parking from now till August 13.

The spokeswoman said: “The timing is really unfortunate, as we know the school holiday season is now under way, but we ask that you bear with us for a little while longer.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this causes, and thank people for their continued patience and support – we look forward to welcoming you to our new centre very soon.”

People can still freely access the forest and visit the Major Oak.

On July 31 the current playground will close.
