A celebrated travel writer who explored Nottinghamshire by night will release a book about his experiences in June.

Dixe Wills, an author and travel writer for The Guardian, toured the country and spent one night in each location, ‘discovering the wonders of the night’ for his new book, titled ‘At Night’.

Dixe spent one night in Sherwood Forest, where he discovered nocturnal animals, and met a modern day Robin Hood.

He said: “Sherwood Forest presented some of the worst weather for me on my tour. It rained all night, but it was fantastic.

“I found a bus shelter that I hid in for a few hours, and I only came out when I spotted frogs trying to cross the road.

“I also heard a Nightjar which sounded like someone reading out the Morse Code really quickly. It was an immense experience.”

Dixe has been a night walker all of his life, and runs an annual night walk in Suffolk for people to experience the darkness.

He said: “We don’t use torches, just our senses and hearing, and it is a great way to help people get over their fears of the dark.”

The book is an unusual, alternative account of the best things to explore in Britain by night, according to Dixe, which will retail at £16.99.

His portfolio of books include: The Z to Z of Great Britain, Tiny Islands: 60 Remarkable Little Worlds Around Britain, and Tiny Campsites (Cool Camping).

His latest book includes a 115 mile cycle ride from London to Suffolk, which began in the evening, taking him 11 hours to complete, despite a host of technical difficulties with his bike along the way.

The book will be published by AA, and will released June 21.
