Selston students shown how to aim high

Eleven year 10 students on the school’s gifted and talented programme attended the conference in Leeds, which was organised by the organisation PIXL (Partners in Excellence), which Selston belongs to.

The event aims to better inform youngsters about what applying for university entails and help them to successfully apply for a place at the best universities in the country.

Speakers from Oxford and Cambridge and Russell Group universities also explained what they are looking for in prospective students.

Diane Scott, the school’s gifted and talented co-ordinator, said: “Competition for places at top universities is fierce. We want to help ensure that our students have the best fighting chance of gaining offers and places, and we intend this conference to be part of that process.”

The conference has motivated the students who attended to work harder for their GCSEs, choose the right A levels and submit strong university applications.

Sophie Starr said: “I enjoyed learning new information about the top universities in the country. I liked that we were inspired to push ourselves to be the best and achieve to our potential.”

“I am more likely to go to university now and it has opened my mind more to what I want to do when I leave school,” added Niall Askew.
