A MAJOR proposal to change the face of Sutton in a bid to regenerate the town centre and markets is currently being discussed, Chad can exclusively reveal.
Ashfield District Council has set out plans to buy the Conservative Club on Fox Street, along with the adjacent bowling green and parking area, so that it can provide a ‘significant development opportunity’ in the town.
The plans were revealed during an extraordinary cabinet meeting on 11th October as an exempt item, meaning no members of the public or press were allowed to be present.
If the council is successful in securing the land, it wants to demolish the Conservative Club to make way for a host of projects, which could include the relocation of the council front office services, market relocation and further development such as affordable housing. There could also be more development at the existing outdoor market.
The cabinet report, obtained by Chad, states: “To maximise potential regenerative benefit, it is key that [the] Fox Street offices and a strip between the Conservative Club and Portland Square are within Ashfield District Council ownership. As a package this could provide significant development opportunity.”
