Second phase of Edwinstowe dig announced

The next phase of an archaeological dig in Edwinstowe which organisers hope will prove people lived in the village in the seventh century has been announced.

The second phase of excavations on the Robin Hood’s Village Volunteer Dig will run from Sunday 26th to Friday 31st October.

The first phase of the dig ran finished on 25th August and saw a total of 117 amateur archaeologists roll up their sleeves to explore life in the ancient village.

Andy Gaunt, from Mercian Archeological Services, said: “ We are returning to continue our test pit investigations into the development of Edwinstowe village and the landscape of Sherwood Forest.

“Archaeologically, it is a very important project, but we are doing it as a community thing.

“It is not just the preserve of academics and professionals. Volunteers get to learn about the area and how to do archeology as well.”

No experience is necessary and as well as digging there will be less physically demanding opportunities such as finds washing and archaeological drawing.
