Searches ongoing at a house where a gas explosion took place in Newark have revealed a second body.

Attempts to recover the body of a woman are expected to take place later today.

A controlled demolition will also be carried out as the property is not considered safe.

The gas explosion happened shortly before 5.15pm last night, Sunday 19th May, at the house in Wright Street.

A man’s body was discovered just after midnight following a search of the rubble.

More than 100 people were evacuated from their nearby homes as a precaution and a rest centre was set up at the Grove Leisure Centre. Work is currently ongoing with the local council and partners to manage their needs.

Two children and a woman were taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment to smoke inhalation and have since been discharged. A man also sustained serious injuries and smoke inhalation and remains in hospital.

A number of roads remain closed off in the immediate vicinity and diversions are in place.
