Scooterists from Ashfield and Mansfield have rallied round to raise money for an injured club member.

Riders from Sutton in Ashfield Scooter Club are taking part in a big ride out to help out Rick ‘Grumps’ Burdis who broke his leg in a freak accident.

Rick, 52 of Daletoft Road, Sutton was riding in formation when he came off his Peugeot Django scooter after he was in collision with another scooterist.

The crash caused an open dislocated ankle wound and broke his tibula and fibula.

He has just returned home after 16 days in Queen’s Medical Centre.

Rick now back at home with partner Mandy and their four children said: ”I’m in a bit of pain but it is good to get home.”

He has had two operations to repair his broken bones.

“They fitted me with titanium bolts and I’m not allowed to put weight on it for six to eight weeks and I can’t ride my scooter for three months, which will tear me to bits.

“The doctor told me if I hadn’t been wearing proper boots I would have lost my right foot, so it is worth underlining the importance of wearing the correct equipment when you are riding a scooter.

“My helmet took most of the beating to my face and head.”

Robert Wikkins, a founder member of the club “We are raising money to help support Rick’s family and himself through this difficult time, as he will not be mobile and on his feet for months.”

“This could have happened to any of us.

“He is an avid scooterist who loves his bike, music and the scene.

“As a scooter community we are teaming up with Mansfield Town Scooter Club and the Armed Forces Scooter Club to organise a ride out event to raise money to get his scooter sorted and get him back on his feet.”

Rick, who was christened Grumps by his grandchildren, has the name emblazoned on his machine. He thanked everyone who has helped him.

He said: “Everyone at the club has been absolutely fantastic.

“To say it is a new club - just 10-12 weeks old - they have been really good to me.”

The Run For the Grumps ride on August 20 will start from the Mansfield Town’s One Call Stadium , ending at the Travellers Rest in Sutton where chip cobs are promised.

The scooter club has set up a Facebook page and account so people can donate money and pay straight in.

A raffle will be held on the day and the club is approaching local businesses for donations of prizes.
