Schools tackle homophobia

The charity has produced a new film resource for primary schools called Free and its writer and director Rikki Beadle-Blair visited Sutton Community Academy, giving young people the chance to see the film and take part in a Q and A session with him.

The film explores gender stereotypes, homophobia and what it is like to be part of a family which is perceived as different.

A new Ofsted Framework requires schools to actively promote tolerance and respect for different communities, and tackle discrimination in all its forms, and these workshops will support school leaders in delivering on this agenda.

Coun Liz Plant, Committee Vice-Chairman for Children and Young People’s Services, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This initiative is just one of the ways we can raise awareness of these issues and engage with schools to promote respect among all pupils whatever their background.”

In July, Nottinghamshire County Council was awarded the accolade of Most Improved in the Stonewall Education Equality Index rising about 20 places – receiving its certificate of achievement in November.
