School’s ‘rapid response’ to Ofsted probe

St Peter’s Church of England Primary and Nursery School, in Bellamy Road, was told it ‘must do better’ when it was inspected by schools watchdog Ofsted in June.

Inspectors have now carried out their first monitoring visit and have concluded that staff are working hard to turn the school around.

In a letter to head teacher Pearl Day, Ofsted inspector Clive Moss said the school has “responded rapidly to the inspection. “

“The staff have revised the school’s policy on marking and it is apparent from talking to the pupils and looking at their work that the teachers are putting the revisions into practice.

“The changes mean that the pupils have more opportunities to correct, or improve their work, which means also that the level of challenge for them is increasing.

“The teachers are identifying themes and topics for the pupils’ work that they intend will be more interesting to boys, in particular.

“The boys with whom I spoke were able to tell me about subjects and opportunities for learning that had interested them, including encouraging them to read.”

The school was told it needed to improve the quality of teaching by raising standards in all subjects, as well as improving assessment and marking.
