School's joy at good rating

Staff and pupils at a Forest Town school are celebrating after it was rated good by education inspectors.

Staff from education watchdog Ofsted have bailed the standard of Holly Primary School.

Inspectors carried out a short visit after the last full inspection, in June 2014, rated the school as good.

And they said the leadership team led by Duncan White, headteacher, have maintained the good quality of education in the school since then.

They said the school is led well, managed effectively, organised efficiently and is, justifiably, popular with and held in high regard by parents and carers.

They said pupils make good progress over the course of their time at the school, with their progress in maths particularly strong.

In his report, Clive Moss, Ofsted inspector, said the support, training and various other opportunities staff have received have helped secure notable improvements in the quality of teaching.

He said: “You have, for example, improved the ways in which the teachers assess the pupils’ work.

“The teachers now ensure the guidance and feedback given to the pupils has a clear impact on the pupils’ learning.

The report said staff know the pupils well as individuals and have a good understanding of specific things that hold back some.

The school tailors the support for individuals who need additional help with their learning and pupils are supported well in lessons.

He said that leaders should ensure pupils are as able to identify and to correct errors in their writing as they are in maths, while boys should develop the confidence and the skills to be able to express their views verbally to the best of their abilities.

Provision for pupils who speak English as an additional language should reflect the best practice in supporting their learning needs.

Mr White said: “I am really pleased that the dedication of staff, the enthusiasm of the children and the support from our parent group have all been recognised in this very positive and uplifting report.

“As a school we recognise how hard everyone works and this report highlights this.”
