Schools commemorate Armistice Day

Schools across the Dispatch district have been marking Armistice Day in different ways.

Pupils from Holy Cross Primary in Hucknall spent Monday activiely involved in various activities to commemorate the special day including drawing, bringing in family war memorabilia, writing poems and looking back at the past conflicts and learning about the significance of the day.

Meanwhile at Hucknall’s National Academy, students from Year 11 presented a house assembly of their experiences whilst on a school trip visiting the battlefields of Northern France and Belgium.

Classes also explored the day by learning how different cultures mark the day, watching War Horse, writing and studying poems, drawing pictures and designing war memorials.

“The wars are as significant today as they were years ago and it is still very important to remember what happened in history,” said Emma Humphreys, aged 14.

“We shouldn’t forget the soldiers who gave up their lives so we can have our freedom,” added 13 year-old Jack Townsend.

Soldiers are very brave fighting for their country and it is interesting to look back and see what happened in history.”
