School world speed record acknowledged

Staff and students at the Joseph Whitaker School in Rainworth are celebrating after their record-breaking efforts were formally acknowledged by Guiness World Records.

Earlier this month, students smashed the record for the fastest rocket-powered model car, with a new speed of 533.10 mph.

Three teams from the school’s young engineers’ club broke the former record of 287mph, which was set in 2011.

Teacher Phil Worsley told Chad: “We started with buying a simple rocket kit, building them and firing them into the sky – then developed our ideas from there.”
