School raises money for Macmillian

Kelly Wright, manager of Papplewick pre-school began fundraising for Macmillian cancer support in memory of her colleague Amanda Atkin, who passed away on 7th May 2016 to terminal cancer.

Amanda was diagnosed in June 2014, and learned that the lung cancer had spread to her bones.

Amanda endured two rounds of gruelling chemotherapy, whilst staying strong for her two sons.

Amanda’s last wish was for Kelly to raise money for Macmillian, who helped Amanda and her family.

Last year, Kelly challenged herself by completing a skydive, and despite her fear of heights she jumped out a plane at thirteen thousand feet.

Staff and parents also helped Kelly arrange a ball, which took place on June 3 2017, and was decorated in purple, Amanda’s favourite colour.

Companies from around the area donated prizes for a raffle at the ball, which included spa days, afternoon teas, and Centre Parcs vouchers.

The ball and skydive raised an incredible £3394.

Kelly said: “I have struggled with the grieving process, but I am ready to start thinking of a new challenge for next year.”

She added: “I’m really happy with what I’ve raised and I’m thinking about what to do for next year, I want to top the skydive.”
