School makes poppy man for legion

Brian Marples, Chairman of the Warsop Branch of the Royal British Legion, is pictured here receiving a poppy figure made by Steve Mounsey, middle, a technician at Warsop’s Meden School.

Headteacher Dave Hooker, right, presents the figure.

The legion use a similar, but larger, poppy man to draw people into conversation about the charity.

But, due to its size it was becoming unmanageable and getting damaged when placed into vehicles to transport. So Meden School was approached by the branch and agreed to make another.

A legion spokesman said: “Poppy Child, as he has been christened, was taken to the branch meeting the same night and introduced to the branch members who were overwhelmed with how magnificent he was.”

Branch secretary Peter Hopkins said: “We are greatly appreciative of all the hard work Mr Mounsey has put into this and Meden school for allowing him to carry out this work.

“It demonstrates how the school reaches out to the community.”
