Safety plans won’t include traffic signals

Safety improvements are set to be made to a road in Bilsthorpe, but will not meet campaigner demands for traffic signals.

The improvements on the A614 at its junction with Mickledale Lane are part of a £7m county-wide programme of works approved by the authority’s transport and highways committee.

They follow a feasibility study carried out at the junction last year after a campaign by local people who had asked for traffic signals to be installed.

But the council says that it does not have the cash to pay for traffic signals and is instead planning other safety measures.

Committee chairman Coun Kevin Greaves said: “Whilst we cannot justify the cost of a traffic signal scheme at this junction -- particularly at a time when the county council is having to make savings of £154m – there are a number of improvements we can make.

“The improvements will offer pedestrians an easier and safer crossing over the A614, which enables them to access the bridleway on the other side of the road.

““It also uses lining and hatching, along with a couple of further refuges, to prevent vehicle overtaking manoeuvres in the vicinity of the junction, making it safer for vehicles.”

Previous improvement work to the A614 has included the installation of average speed cameras on the stretch between the A60 Leapool Roundabout in the south and the A616 Ollerton Roundabout to the north.

A lower 50mph speed limit has also been introduced as well as improvements made to signs and road markings.
