REVEALED: The Derbyshire food outlets with the worst and best hygiene ratings

The damning scores – based on the latest inspections by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) – mean “urgent improvement” is necessary.

Ratings are based on how the food is handled, the condition and cleanliness of the premises and the management of the business which includes good record keeping.

Businesses with zero-star marks have hit back, however.

A spokesman for Bamboo Cottage, in Water Street, Bakewell, said: “Since the last inspection, we have been compliant with the FSA and carried out a thorough clean-up of the kitchen.

“Things are better now.”

Sean Lennon, manager of Lennons Pool and Snooker, in Stephenson Place, Chesterfield, said: “When they did the inspection we’d only just opened up.

“Inspectors have been out since and said there’s no problem with food hygiene in the kitchen –

“One of the reasons we failed last year is because they found what looked like a mouse dropping but in fact it was a piece of toast.

“We’ve sent our staff on food hygiene training courses and everything is clean and tidy in the kitchen.

“There’s nothing to worry about now.”

China Rose Chinese Restaurant, in South Parade, Matlock Bath, and Mayflower, in Cuttholme Way, Chesterfield, had not responded to requests for comments as the Derbyshire Times went to press.

A further 105 outlets in Derbyshire failed to reach the minimum three out of five-star rating last year.

Hundreds of outlets, however, were awarded five-star ‘very good’ hygiene ratings.

A spokesman for the FSA said: “It’s the things you can’t see – like germs spread by bad hygiene practices – that you need to consider.

“There’s one easy way to set your mind at rest – check the food hygiene rating.”
