COUNCIL leaders insist they are prepared for a harsh winter after stockpiling more gritting salt than ever before.

Weather forecasters are predicting another cold winter, with arctic conditions possible as early as November.

To cope with another prolonged spell of icy roads, County Hall has stored 12,000 tonnes more salt than official Government recommendations.

Existing salt barns are already full, and a key priority is now getting the new £8.6m highways depot in Bilsthorpe ready.

Nottinghamshire County Council is now working closely with parish councils and is in talks with farmers to see if they can help if the weather turns bad.

Coun Richard Jackson said: “We are determined to keep our county on the move this winter.”
