A Ravenshead man is gearing up to walk a marathon in memory of his wife who he described as his ‘soulmate’.

Mike Farley will tackle the Cancer Research UK’s Shine Night Walk next month, a full 26.2-mile marathon through London in the middle of the night.

His wife Carol, also known to her friends as Cazi, passed away in May last year after a long fight with breast cancer.

Describing her as a ‘truly inspirational person’ who had a ‘very positive approach to life’ despite her illness, 59-year-old Mike says he wants to help fight the illness that took his wife from him.

Mike, a former head of services at Mansfield District Council said: “I am already well into my 16 week training plan so you will often see me many days each week walking around Ravenshead clocking up the miles in preparation for the challenge.

“To date I have walked over 320 miles in training and recently achieved some key milestones by completing two 13.1 mile half marathons and recently also completing a 15-mile walk.

“By the time I have completed my training I will have walked over 430 miles in total or the equivalent of just over 16 full marathons!”

Mike originally set himself a fundraising target of £2,000, but after smashing that already, he is now aiming to top the £10,000 mark. To sponsor Mike, log onto www.justgiving.com/mikefarley

Donations can also be made by text message. To donate £10 - Text CAZI66 £10 to 70070.

There are also collection boxes and sponsorship forms available at Platinum Hair in Ravenshead, and the village Post Office.

He is hoping that local businesses may also step forward with sponsorship.
