Rainworth Skatepark proves a hit

Rainworth youngsters jumped for joy at the opening of the village’s first ever skate park.

The skate park and play area was officially opened by councillors Mark Buttery and Yvonne Woodhead on Saturday at a special ceremony followed by a display by the Moonshine skate team from Lincoln.

Work on the £260,000 project, which has been in the pipeline for three years started after a mammoth fundraising effort.

Mum Clare Salmon, of the Rainworth Skatepark Association, came up with the idea for the park off Kirklington Road because Rainworth is desperately short of play facilities for youngsters of all ages.

She said: “The opening went really well. It’s lovely to see children playing on it who have been involved from the start, more than four years ago.

“It’s being very will used over the summer holidays - there are people coming from all over Nottinghamshire.

“We have had some really good feedback about the park from everyone who has used it.”

The association is fundraising for CCTV cameras for the park and on the opening day alone raised £1,400 towards their £2,000 target.

A total of £130,000 for the park has come from the developers of three housing schemes in Rainworth, while £50,000 has been awarded from Notts County Council’s supporting local communities fund.

The park has evolved into a true community project, with funding from a host of sources, including £75,000 from WREN, a not-for-profit business that awards grants from landfill tax.

Clare also thanked Rainworth Parish Council, who will maintain the park, and Newark and Sherwood District Council for their support.

The land has been leased from Rainworth Welfare for a peppercorn rent.
