Free bells are being given away to combat one of the most common types of crime, ‘handbag dipping’.
Handbag dipping is when offenders steal items from handbags left unzipped or unattended.
These offences can happen at any time of the year but are particularly prevalent around the festive period when shopping areas are busy with large numbers of people.
Ashfield Community Safety Partnership, funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, have a number of purse bells to provide free of charge to members of the public.
Ashfield District Council Community Protection Officers and representatives of the Ashfield Police Safer Neigbourhood Team will be distributing the bells when they are present at the following events:
30/11/2018 – Kirkby-In-Ashfield Light Switch On, Kirkby-in-Ashfield Outdoor Market.
01/12/2018 - Sutton-In-Ashfield Light Switch On, Portland Square, Sutton-in-Ashfield.
05/12/2018 – Hucknall Light Switch On, Hucknall Outdoor Market.
05/12/2018 – Selston Light Switch On, Nottingham Road, Selston.
Officers will also be on patrol in Sutton, Kirkby and Hucknall town centres on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th December 2018 when they will be offering them to shoppers.
Please speak to them if you would like one.
