Poppy planting campaign planned in Hucknall to mark First World War celebrations

A large-scale poppy-planting scheme is being planned in Hucknall and the rest of Ashfield this year to commemorate the centenary of World War One.

The news was revealed by Ashfield District Council’s Area Committee for Hucknall during a meeting this week.

Andy Fell, of the council’s environment department, said the intention for Hucknall was to plant poppy seeds in main parks and some housing courts to bring remembrance into the community.

Schools are being invited to support planting projects to get young people involved,” said Mr Fell.

“Also, the public will be encouraged to add any poppies they would like to plant in designated areas. This would follow a facebook campaign to encourage people to buy poppy seeds from B&Q stores.

“But as the idea of scattering poppies is not the best way to plant, providing areas for the public who wish to do this will ensure a better display.”

The committee agreed to grant £1,000 to finance poppies for Hucknall, while a map is being published on the council’s website to encourage people to sponsor planting in different parts of the town. A suitable memorial on Hucknall Market Place is also planned.

Coun Trevor Locke said: “We must make the commemoration special.”
