Councillor David Martin, Nottinghamshire County Councillor for the Selston Division has been providing residents with 30mph signs to stick on their wheelie bins.

He claims that some residents use rural roads in the district like “a racetrack’ and has called for the county council to take action to enforce speed limits across the Selston Parish area.

So far, the speed awareness signs have been delivered to properties on Barrows Hill Lane, Crescent Road and Main Road, Jacksdale and Alfreton Road, Jubilee and Church Lane, Selston.

Cllr Martin, who is a long time road safety campaigner, said: “It’s all well and good having speed limits – but if they are not enforced then what’s the point? I hope this quirky idea will make some drivers think twice about their speed.

“Nottinghamshire Police’s roving speed cameras are regularly on rural roads mainly at my request. We need though to find a longer term solution to traffic enforcement before somebody is seriously injured or worse.”

He added: “Residents from certain hot spots across the Selston Parish have bitterly complained to me about speeding issues along our roads.

“That’s why I have taken it upon myself to deliver speed awareness stickers for use on resident’s wheelie bins. I hope this will add to drivers’ understanding about our speed limits.

“During the lockdown, our roads have been almost deserted, but I do worry that after the lockdown our roads will resemble a grand prix again.

“I will continue to push for a long term solution like interactive speed signs, increased cameras, additional signage and more police patrols.

“We have heard quite a lot about social distancing lately but some drivers need to learn more about social responsibility. That means sticking within our speed limits.”

If there are any residents in the Selston Parish area who would like speed limit signs for their wheelie bins they are asked to email [email protected].
