Well-used footpath set to be closed for new factory -- latest Mansfield plans

A well-used footpath in Mansfield is set to be closed to make way for the building of a second factory for one of the town’s longest established businesses.

The path, between Crown Farm Way and Newlands Road in Forest Town, is not surfaced, lit or drained, but takes the form of a trodden route and has been used for more than 20 years.

However, the sand and gravel supplier Mansfield Sand Co Ltd, which owns the land, has submitted a planning application to Mansfield District Council for the ‘stopping up’ of the footpath, which is 305 metres long.

This is to pave the way for a new production facility and increased yard space as part of an expansion of the company, which was granted planning permission by the council in October.

A letter sent to the council by Mansfield Sand’s agent for the scheme, consulting firm Tetra Tech, of Newcastle, says: “During the site clearance stage and prior to the construction of the new factory, Mansfield Sand intends to provide a temporary diversion route for the path while the application to close it is determined.”

A further letter, sent by Mansfield Sand itself, states: “Although this footpath is private, crossing the land known as MSC Brick Works, it has been in continuous use for such a period that a formal application for its ‘stopping-up’ or diversion is necessary.”

Mansfield Sand, which has its headquarters at Sandmartin House on nearby Oak Tree Lane, has been in existence for more than 180 years.

Its production sites include Two Oaks Quarry off Coxmoor Road in Sutton, and it currently employs almost 100 full-time staff.

Since the 1980s, it has grown a solid, countrywide reputation as a specialist supplier of a comprehensive range of materials for the construction and maintenance of sports, landscape and equestrian surfaces.

Its extensive portfolio of clients includes some of the most prestigious sports venues, including golf courses, across the UK and Europe.

The council’s planning officers are currently considering the footpath proposal and hope to make a decision or recommendation by their deadline date of Thursday, January 15.
