Mr Bradley spoke during women and equalities questions to ask the minister what the department will do to ensure this is the last generation of ‘lost boys’ who do not have the same opportunities in life.

The mminister agreed with him and said that the Government acknowledged this issue, which is why it was bringing in extra support for all disadvantaged children, including those from white working class backgrounds.

The Department for Education has also introduced the Hungry Little Minds campaign, which targets low income parents to support their child’s early language development.

Mr Bradley said: “As the statistics show, white working class boys are far more likely to underperform against boys of all other races and ethnicities.

"Despite the shocking statistics, it’s viewed as unfashionable to stand up for these boys.

“We need to remember that these are the same lads that throughout history have fought to defend our county, toiled underground to keep our lights on and have kept our country working throughout the last century.

"Far more needs to be done to make sure they can get a good education and aspire to do great things.”

“I fail to see why the Equalities Act doesn’t recognise socio-economic status or poverty as one of its ‘protected characteristics’, whilst ‘white’ and ‘male’ are often ignored.

“I’ll continue making the case for working class families so we can truly level up our country.”
