The MP has confirmed to his constituents that there was ‘no dramatic resignation’ and that he has stood down from his role as Parliamentary Private Secretary in order to spend more time in Mansfield.

Rumours surfaced that he had possibly been ‘pushed’ from the role after his comments in parliament around the possibility that the extension of free school meals would result in some families abusing the voucher system, but he says that simply isn’t the case.

In a video on his YouTube Channel, Ben explained his decision was made weeks ago after spending more time at home during lockdown.

He said: “I’m surprised by the fact that this made the news today if I’m honest. There’s been a lot of speculation about why I’m standing down but it ultimately comes down to the fact that I want to focus more on the constituency side of things and spend more time with my kids.

“The role required me to be in London four days a week, and this is time I would rather spend in Mansfield in order to focus on local issues, rather than climbing the career ladder.

“Lockdown showed we can still work effectively despite being away from Westminster.

“Don’t worry though, I’ll still be spending time down there, pushing ministers to support my constituents.

“So, I can confirm that there was no dramatic resignation. I just want to see my kids and spend more time on local priorities.”
