Long-standing chippy hopes to help a new business -- all the latest Mansfield plans

A long-standing fish and chip shop in Mansfield is hoping to help a new business take its first step on the ladder.

For the Barn Lane Chippy, which dates back more than 65 years, wants to demolish an eyesore garage on its premises and convert it into a commercial unit.

The takeaway, which stands on the corner of Crown Street and Big Barn Lane, has submitted a planning application to Mansfield District Council for the change, complete with a new access.

The application has been made by Kumar’s Properties Ltd, a Ravenshead-based company which now owns the chippy after buying it from the previous owner last September.

A planning statement has been compiled by Kumar’s agent, Phase Architecture, of Retford. It explains: “The garage building is currently used for the Barn Lane Chippy and has an apartment upstairs.

“But it is becoming dangerous and is, at the very least, an eyesore with no other justifiable use.

"The creation of a small commercial unit would remove a dilapidated building from the area and give a local business or sole trader the opportunity to make their first steps into the world if business. It would offer them a micro-working environment, with new parking spaces on site.”

Phase says the new unit would be a straight replacement for the garage but with “a significantly more appealing design”.

It would also be a boost to the appearance of the local neighbourhood and help to stimulate local economic growth.

The immediate vicinity is predominantly residential, but there are other businesses dotted around the area.

Barn Lane Chippy is a traditional fish and chip shop that has stood on the same spot since at least the 1960s and was run by the same family from 1995 until last year.

When put up for sale, it was marketed as “a business that benefits from a strong reputation and presents opportunities for further growth and excellent potential for development”.

The council’s planning officers are currently considering the proposal and hope to make a decision or recommendation by their deadline date of Wednesday, February 11.
