It is Mr Norris’ first cabinet position and he replaces David Lammy in the role.

Since Labour returned to power in 2024, he has held the junior positions of Minister of State for Border Security and Asylum and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Building Safety, Fire and Local Growth.

When Labour were in opposition, he held shadow minister posts for policing, levelling-up and public health and patient safety.

Posting on his Facebook page, Mr Norris said: “It is an immense privilege to take on the role of Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice.

"I’m eager to get to work delivering swifter justice, safer communities and restoring confidence in our prison and probation services.

“I look forward to working alongside all the dedicated professionals who work in our courts, tribunals, prisons and probation services to achieve the change the public wants to see.”
