Kennels in switch from breeding to doggie day care -- latest Ashfield plans
A successful dog-kennels business is hoping Ashfield District Council will bark their approval for a change to the way it operates.
Luke Hemstock, of the Little Paws Forest View business in Annesley Woodhouse, has submitted a planning application to the council.
For the last eight years, its 12 kennels on Forest Road have been used for breeding dogs. But now, Little Paws wants to switch to doggie day care, offering home boarding for up to ten pet pooches.
Day care is increasingly popular with dog-owners while they are at work. It provides their pets with exercise and mental stimulation, and enables them to socialise and interact with other dogs – all under the supervision of professional staff.

Luke says he runs the business with his wife and daughter at their home address, and has not received any complaints since it was launched and was licensed by the council.
Addressing any concerns neighbours might have, he has submitted a statement with the plan, which says: “We have extensive knowledge of dogs. We know the importance of stimulating dogs to keep them content.
"We feel we need to provide the best environment for them, which is why we would like to use our day centre for this.
"Our opening times would be 7 am to 6 pm Mondays to Fridays. We have parking space for nine vehicles. But customers would drop off their dogs at our front door and leave. Their stay would be two minutes, maximum.
"As we serve the local community, most of our customers walk to drop off their dogs and collect them. Collections would be from 1 pm to 6 pm, with time slots allocated to each customer. No dogs would stay overnight at the kennels.”
The council’s planning officers are now considering the change-of-use proposal and hope to make a decision or recommendation before their deadline date of Thursday, January 8.
