Heritage pledge over changes at railway station -- all the latest Mansfield plans
Promises have been made that one of Mansfield’s designated heritage assets – its historic railway station – would not be harmed during alteration work.
Mansfield District Council’s property services team has submitted a planning application to create a store room within the east wing of the station, which is a grade II listed building.
This would be achieved by blocking an existing opening in the passenger waiting-area on the concourse with a stud partition wall, and then forming a new door to provide access to the east wing.
The changes would restore the area of the station to its previous layout before alterations were made in 2015. But a heritage statement, compiled by council officers, stresses that no structural work would be required, either internally or externally.

"The proposal would not impact the heritage asset,” says the statement. “All the work could even be readily reverted if necessary.”
The station was originally opened in 1849 and rebuilt between 1872 and 1875. It was axed after the infamous Beeching Report in 1963 when Mansfield became the largest town in England without a railway service.
The building obtained listed status in 1978 and the station was fully revived with the launch of the Robin Hood Line 30 years ago.
Its east and west wing have had numerous commercial tenants over the years, and the former is currently occupied by a mining museum.
A decision or recommendation on the proposed work is expected by the deadline date of Thursday, January 8.
