The proposals, submitted by Nottingham firm Henry Mein partnership, will see the disused tech store at 78 Outram Street converted into the two properties, with building work expected later this year.

The site was once the base for Active8 Computer Solutions, which had remained derelict and was up for sale in October before being bought.

Similar plans had previously been rejected by Ashfield District Council over concerns that the proposals were “of poor design and failed to enhance the appearance” of Outram Street.

However, resubmitted plans have been accepted by councillors, who viewed that the updated proposals will improve the “visual amenity” on the busy Sutton street.

The planning document states: “Along Outram Street, there are a number of examples of long-standing vacant retail units, one of which is the premises at the application site.

“The scheme proposes the removal of the existing shop front, and replacing it with a block and render frontage, incorporating two windows at first floor level, and a further window and access door at ground level.

“These elements draw upon the character of surrounding nearby properties, and improves the appearance of the existing building.

“The proposal will also bring a vacant unit back into use, improving the visual amenity offered by the wider locality.

“The proposed scheme is therefore considered appropriate and will not result in significant impact on the character and appearance of the surrounding street scene.

“The two flats proposed are considered to provide adequate means of accommodation within close proximity to the town centre.”

The planning documents state that the two properties will not have off-street parking access, due to how close they are to Sutton town centre.

It says that future occupants of the flats would have “little use for a car”, with its easy walking access to public transport facilities in the town.

It adds: “It is considered that due to the close proximity of the premises to Sutton town centre, any future occupants would have little use for a car.

“The premises is also within easy walking distance of transport nodes, public open spaces and leisure facilities.”
