The Mansfield members voted for Syria-born George Jabbour, 36, as their mayoral candidate, who will take on incumbent Kate Allsop and Labour's Paul Bradshaw to become the town's executive mayor for a four year term.

The Nottingham Road resident, who has a degree in engineering and started a small business to help public sector organisations with their investments, has become an "active member" of the Mansfield community since moving to the town this year.

He also believes it is important to "support the town centre" moving forward and was "honoured" to be selected as the Conservative candidate.

He said: “It is such an honour to be selected as the Conservative mayoral candidate.

"I will work tirelessly to repay the trust that was placed in me, and I will also use my skills and experience to serve our community and deal with the local issues.”

Ben Bradley, Conservative MP for Mansfield, added: “I am looking forward to working closely with George over the coming months to put forward a positive vision for Mansfield ahead of next year’s local elections and build on what we have achieved so far for our town.”

The candidate selection process has been an ongoing case for the Conservative party over the last three months, with an initial three-person shortlist released in August.

John Roughton, chairman of Ashfield and Mansfield conservative association, said: “During this selection process, we were very fortunate to consider a number of excellent local candidates who are passionate about their vision for Mansfield.

"After the three finalists made presentations and fielded questions from members of the audience, the members voted for George as our candidate.”

The Labour Party selected Paul Bradshaw as their mayoral candidate in July.

Kate Allsop, Mansfield's mayor, has also confirmed she will be standing for the position again.
