The pandemic has impacted on a number of events this year and Remembrance services are no exception.

The usual parades and church services are unable to take place, but events will still be held across the district to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in active service.

It is important that we are still able to mark this day.

However, the government has issued clear guidance about the numbers of people who are allowed to gather.

This guidance has had to be followed when organising this year’s Remembrance events.

Residents are asked not to gather at war memorials at 11am this year to ensure everyone can be kept safe.

Instead, people are asked to participate in the act of Remembrance from home.

Coun Jason Zadrozny, Ashfield District Council leader, said, “It is with a heavy heart that Government guidance will severely curtail what is always an amazing day in numerous locations across our district.

"We understand why though – our number one priority however is to ensure that people laying wreathes at our cenotaphs and memorials are safe.”

The council will be holding a virtual Remembrance Day on its social media channels, the Kirkby and Sutton wreath laying will be live streamed, and residents can get involved by displaying poppies in their windows.

Coun Zadrozny continued: “We are determined to ensure that we do everything possible to ensure that across the Ashfield district to remember those who gave so much.

"Whilst these are not council events – we are delighted to support them.

"As council leader, I want to thank the volunteers from all the various organisations who are working hard to ensure we find a way to still remember the fallen.”

Poppy lights will be installed across the district this week and will remain lit until the week after Remembrance Sunday.

The lights will be installed at the council offices in Kirkby, Portland Square in Sutton, Market Square in Hucknall, Nottingham Road in Selston, Alfreton Road in Underwood, Main Road in Jacksdale, Market Plate in Huthwaite, Badger Box in Annesley and High Street in Stanton Hill.
