Ashfield councillor told he 'can't be part' of ruling independents

A senior figure at Ashfield District Council has been removed from the ruling Ashfield Independents.

Coun Dave Hennigan was the Ashfield Independent councillor for the Central and New Cross ward, after being elected in 2019.

He was responsible for corporate communications, governance, party and cross portfolio support, and also acted as the party’s spokesman.

However after several disagreements with several members of the party, a decision was made unanimously by the party on Sunday night that Councillor Hennigan be removed from the Ashfield Independents.

It is understood he remains a councillor, and will now sit as an unaligned independent councillor.

CounJason Zadrozny, council leader, said: “He has been a very close friend of mine for 15 years, and what has happened doesn’t change that.

“However the party decided unanimously that he can no longer be part of the party.

“We have written to him formally saying he can’t be part of our party.”

Coun Hennigan has been approached for comment.
