Police issue urgent witness appeal after man’s body is found in Alfreton

Detectives have issued an urgent appeal for information after a man’s body was found in Alfreton in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday.

Police discovered the body on Wingfield Road at 3.55am after receiving a 999 call.

Forensics officers spent most of yesterday carrying enquiries at the scene where a white tent was erected.

The body has now been moved and Wingfield Road, which was closed for about 14 hours, reopened last night.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “The man suffered head injuries.

“He has not yet been formally identified and police have launched an investigation.”

The spokesman added: “We would urge anyone who was in the area of the A615 Oakerthorpe to Alfreton road between 3am and 4am to contact us.

“Also, if anyone has noticed any damage to a car that may have happened overnight, they are asked to contact police on 101.”

Residents have taken to social media to tell of their shock at the news.

They have also paid their condolences to the man’s family.

On Derbyshire police’s Facebook page, Michelle Rose said: “Dreadful news.”

Mandy Holmes said: “So sad – cannot begin to imagine his family’s pain. RIP.”
