Police continue investigation after two dead women discovered in Shirebrook

Detectives are continuing an investigation this weekend into the deaths of two women in Shirebrook.

Police and paramedics were called to a home on Station Road in Shirebrook, close to the junction with Vernon Street, at about 10.10pm, on Friday, February 26, where the bodies of two women were found inside.

A 20-year-old man from Sheffield has been arrested in connection with the discovery and is understood to be still in police custody.

Police stated that they are treating the incident as suspicious and officers are expected to continue to talk to residents and gather any relevant information today, Sunday, February 28, as part of their investigation.

An update following the arrest of the 20-year-old is expected to be released by police in the very near future.

The property concerned, which is semi-detached house, has remained cordoned off as forensic teams and scenes of crime officers carried out investigations.

About six police vehicles were parked in the area of the property which is close to the railway bridge and railway station.

Residents have spoken of their shock following the discovery of the bodies.

Jason Knight, 43, of Station Road, said: “I was out here on Friday evening and it kicked off. Police, paramedics and SOCO turned up and a young lad was arrested.

“This is a nicer area of the town, so it is certainly an unusual thing to happen. There has been nothing like this before It is very sad.”

Mr Knight described one of the deceased women as “a quiet person who kept herself to herself”.

Jackie Freeman, 69, of Station Road, said: “We haven’t lived here long, but we understand this is unusual as it is quite a quiet part of town.

“It makes you think that these things do happen, but we are not going to let something like this interfere with our lives.”

Another resident, Graham Wheatley, said the first he knew something was wrong was when he saw the police and paramedics arrive.

He said: “It is terrible what has happened. We have never come across anything like this before.

“I would see one of the women when taking the dogs out. She seemed a nice-enough lady. We said good morning and hello and she was always polite and friendly.”

Allan Heenan, of Station Motors, on Station Road, said he turned up to work about 8.30am, on Saturday, to find police along Station Road.

He said: “I have only just taken over the business here and I turned up to work and I saw all the police and they have been very busy.

“I had no idea what was happening but have learned since that two women’s bodies have been found and someone has been arrested.”

Police say officers from Shirebrook Safer Neighbourhood Team will be carrying out high-visibility patrols over the weekend and will be on hand to speak to members of the public.
