Police chief to expand volunteer speedwatch scheme

Commissioner Tipping assisted traffic officers and local residents in Mansfield Woodhouse this week in a Speedwatch exercise to check the speed of motorists travelling through the village.

The scheme, which educates motorists in the law and captures trends in those villages identified as experiencing speeding problems, is one of a raft of measures supported by Mr Tipping to help address the concerns of rural communities.

Mr Tipping said: “Make no mistake, rural crime is a key priority and I will be working hard to build trust among our isolated communities and show them that we are addressing their concerns.

“Speeding remains a primary worry for many rural residents which is why we are expanding the Speedwatch scheme, working with our partners to ensure local people are trained and equipped to do much more to combat anti-social driving.

“We’ve also recently launched a new leaflet providing helpful advice to reduce the risk of crime in our rural areas. These safety messages are reinforced by a new dedicated rural website containing information and advice specifically tailored to rural communities.

“Rural communities matter and I am doing everything possible to protect the public’s right to feel safe and protected - regardless of where they live.”

The Commissioner will also announce improvements in the way the Force communicates information and crime prevention advice to rural communities and the proactive work taking place to tackle rural offending.
