Poetry comp plan for Byron Festival

A poetry competition is again being held as part of this year’s Hucknall-based Byron Festival, which will run from Saturday 28th June to Sunday 6th July.

The theme is ‘Byron’s Love of Animals’, with a schools section and an open class.

The winners of each category willl receive a trophy and the overall winner will be awarded the Maureen Crisp Memorial Poetry Trophy for 12 months.

The winner and runner-up in each category will also receive a book token.

The winning poems will be announced at a ‘Poems, Pints and Players’ event at the John Godber Centre, Ogle Street, Hucknall, on Friday 4th July, starting at 7 pm.

This will feature award-winning poet Mark Gwynne Jones and The Gentlemen, a group comprising eight close-harmony singers and a pianist.

Organising committee chairman Ken Purslow said: “The poetry competition has become a special feature of the festival and a high standard has consistently been achieved.”

Previously published poems will not be considered.
