Young and old residents attended a ceremony on Saturday marking both the start of the First World War and the donation of its playing fields.

The recently refurbished plaque on the playing fields was donated to the village by Lady Canarvon at the end of the First World War.

Richard Goad, chairman of the Friends of Teversal, said: ”It was beautiful weather and we had an excellent re-dedication service.

“The plaque recognises the 32 servicemen who fought in the war and the six who died in action.

“It had become eroded and we had to track down the original wording.

“The Friends of Teversal worked together with the heritage group and with the help of Ashfield District Council to put the lettering back.”

The ceremony also commemorated the gift by Lady Carnarvon of the playing fields for the use of the villagers.

A re-dedication service was held by the Rev Adrian Dempster of St Catherine’s Church.

Coun Glenys Maxwell gave a speech on behalf of the people of Teversal.

The Kirkby Colliery Band played at the ceremony which was also attended by members of the Royal British Legion.

St Catherine’s Church was open to visitors throughout the weekend with a display of wartime memorabilia.
