The major town centre development would entail knocking down Gala Bingo on Albert Street and building a four-storey Travelodge in its place.

According to the application, the site has already been “earmarked for closure” as traditional bingo halls are struggling due to the rise of online gambling and a ban on smoking in public paces.

This is the fourth application to build a hotel in the Mansfield area.

Martyn Saxton, director of place and wellbeing at Mansfield District Council, said: “We can confirm that we’ve received a planning application relating to the demolition of the existing Gala Bingo building on Albert Street and the redevelopment of the site to create a 63-bed hotel with retail space and parking.

“The statutory public consultation period is now underway and the council will seek to determine the application by the target date, which is July 24.”
