Plans to convert Mansfield pub car park into a supermarket

A £1 million mini supermarket could soon be built on a pub car park in Mansfield, if plans are given the green light.

Co-op has submitted plans to Mansfield District Council to transform part of the rear car park of The Reindeer pub on Southwell Road West into a convenience store.

It will face out onto Argyle Street and Reindeer Street to the rear and side of the pub.

The pub will remain open although a small portion of the watering hole to the rear will be demolished and re-built as a single story extension, if the plans are approved.

There is already a Co-op on nearby Carter Lane, but there are no plans to close that store.

It is proposed that more than 20 full and part-time staff will be created by the new store.

The store will consist of a single story, glass-fronted building measuring 223 sq m of retail space.

An ATM is also pencilled in at the store.

There are currently 46 car parking spaces available at the pub, and plans show it will be reduced to 36 if the shop is built.

On behalf of the applicant, NewRiver Retail Property Unit Trust No4, a prepared statement reads: “The scheme will make an efficient use of an existing underused site within an established residential and commercial area.

“The proposed convenience store will serve a local catchment area providing primarily ‘top-up’ shopping facilities.”
