A planning application has been submitted to Mansfield District Council by Germane Properties, which has a base in Nottingham, seeking permission to create a 50-bed home within the Grade II-listed mill.

The proposals also include an extension comprising 32 two-storey apartments for people requiring assisted living.

Assisted living enables individuals or couples to live independently in a specialist complex, but with access to facilities such as nursing and medical help.

If it goes ahead, the plan wouild breathe new life into an iconic site on Hermitage Lane which has been vacant for nine years.

It is believed that the former water-powered textile mill’s last use was as a warehouse for building supplies.

In recent years, the mill has been frequently targeted by vandals, and damage was also caused by an arson attack.

Germane says it hopes the plan will “secure the long-term future of the building”.

However, in its application, the company admits it is worried noise from a nearby standby electricity generator plant might pose problems for residents of the home.
