If approved, the multi-million pound plans would see a new foodstore and five smaller retail units built on the site of Sherwood Lodge where the district council's offices used to be based.

The proposed development has attracted widespread community support.

Mark Rothery, managing director of applicants Rothstone Estates, said: "We believe that this proposed retail development in the centre of Bolsover would deliver significant benefit to the town.

"If our planning application is successful, the development could create up to 200 new full and part-time jobs for the town - in addition to a further 50 which would be created during construction.

"From our public consultation, it is clear that many people are currently travelling out of the town to do their weekly food shop, including to Mansfield, Chesterfield and even as far as Crystal Peaks in Sheffield.

"Our development could help to reverse that trend and provide a further option for people to visit the town centre and spend their money locally and in turn create and support local jobs.

"There has been a really positive reaction from the local community since we launched the consultation for these plans.

"We have had a high level of feedback responses and I am delighted that around 90 per cent of respondents are in support of an improved retail offer for Bolsover.

"Finally, as part of the consultation, we asked respondents to make suggestions of retailers that they would like to see represented in the town.

"We are in very positive discussions with a number of retail occupiers who are interested in coming to Bolsover.

"Once formal agreements are in place, we will be able to announce the names of potential occupiers."

The district council is expected to make a decision on the planning application in the spring.

Morrisons bought the site in 2014.

A spokesman for Morrisons said: "We are keen to see the site redeveloped and are working closely with Rothstone Estates to achieve this."
