An application has been approved by Mansfield District Council to build the shop on vacant land next the Golden Eagle pub, just off Southwell Road West.

It will be the third Aldi to be built in the area, with the existing store off Nottingham Road, and planning permission already given for another on Leeming Lane South, Mansfield Woodhouse.

Mansfield District Council planning committee heard the store would create 50 new jobs with up to 10 staff onsite at any one time.

The new 1,925 sq m shop would include up to 125 parking spaces, six for disabled and six parent and child and would be accessed by Oak Leaf Close, the entrance used by those visiting the Golden Eagle.

A statement on behalf of the applicant, Mark Holbeche of Regal Sherwood Oaks Ltd, stated that the new store would help breathe life into the area, which largely remains scrubland.

The site has had problems with travellers setting up camp on the site in recent years, despite the use of huge concrete bollards to deter them.

The statement read: “The site is vacant and is in a prominent location which acts as a reminder that this business park has struggled to deliver in its entirety.

“The construction of a prominent high-quality foodstore adjacent to the public house demonstrates that the area has benefited from investment and signifies investor confidence in the area.”

The applicants have included the installation of a puffin crossing at the traffic lighted junction which is over capacity. They will contribute £222, 934 towards providing improved facilities for public transport cyclists and pedestrians.and £5,000 towards a local community transport scheme.

It was resolved that the application be granted planning permission with conditions as detailed in the report and with the following additional Conditions and amendment to the Unilateral Undertaking to make the appropriate contributions on commencement of the development as opposed to on occupation of the development.
