PHOTO SLIDESHOW: Wellow Maypole celebrations

TWO British bank holiday traditions collided on Monday - but the people of Wellow did not allow the wet weather to ruin their annual Maypole celebrations.

Umbrellas and raincoats might have been necessary, but the crowds still assembled around the village green to watch the dancing around the village’s new maypole.

And luckily the rain subsided for the procession and the crowning of the new May Queen, Eleanore Leigh.

Janet Carr, of the Maypole Committee, said that everyone involved was “very grateful” for the support from the people who turned out.
