MANSFIELD folk are to help a man’s bid to raise cash for cancer support charity Macmillan through a series of eye-catching events around the region.
Phil Meadley kicks of his bid to help the cause with 16-person sponsored abseil at Miller’s Dale in Derbyshire on 5th February.
Phil (37), inspired by his uncle Ian’s battle with cancer, is also planning a marathon bicycle machine event where participants will try to clock up 2,012 miles on three machines at the Young Vanish pub in Glapwell from 6th to 9th April, backed by Mansfield’s branch of Fitness First at Mansfield Leisure Park on Nottingham Road.
A strongman contest is also being planned for the car park of the Fitness First centre on 26th February, starting at 10am.
Phil’s uncle, Ian, who is now on the road to recovery, was helped by Macmillan nurses while being treated for bowel cancer. To say thanks Phil has now pledged to raise thousands in aid of the organisation.
Said Phil, a keen cricketer: “It’s a cause that’s very personal to me.
“I’m hoping to get about £15,000 over the course of the year through all the different events.”
