Tony Wood had been out walking his Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Tank at Sutton Lawn last week when the dog bolted off after a fox. Tank was later picked up by an Ashfield District Council dog warden and taken to kennels in Ilkeston.

But Tony, who has learning difficulties and is on disability benefits, couldn’t afford the release fees to get Tank back and faced losing the dog who was his ‘only companion’.

However, after the story featured on the Chad website on Monday, the local community rallied round, and Ashfield MP Lee Anderson travelled to the kennels on Tuesday morning, and paid the £170 needed to release Tank.

The pooch was then reunited with his grateful owner in this heartwarming video, captured by Mr Anderson’s team.

The MP said: “I offered to pay the fee for Tony to get Tank back, but the good people of Ashfield once again rallied behind a good cause and are now donating to cover the cost.

“I thank the Chad for highlighting this story which has helped Tony reunite with Tank.”

Tony’s sister Cheryl, who contacted the Chad to highlight Tank’s plight, added: “It is absolutely amazing. Tony is over the moon, it is absolutely fantastic, I am really pleased for him.”
