Warsop Poppy Gang complete annual roadside poppy display

An annual roadside poppy display has been completed by Warsop Poppy Gang.

The display attracts visitors from far and wide and has people working on it all year round to create the poppies.

Jackie Lockton, a member of the Warsop Poppy Gang, said: “The Poppy Gang started with an idea in 2013 in preparation for the centenary of the First World War in 2014.

“It’s a community thing, we have ladies throughout the community knitting and crocheting poppies all year long and then there’s several of us who put the poppies onto these camoflage nets and then the men are responsible for cutting out the poppies and soldiers.

“We’ve got another guy called Martin who has come on board and he is responsible for all the data and information gathering of all the men who have died.

“We are getting people coming and taking a big interest in that information.”

Elizabeth Munnings, of the Warsop Poppy Gang, spoke of how Warsop's now-famous remembrance display attracts visitors from far and wide, bringing people together to honour the fallen.

She said: “So many people come from far and wide. We get a lot of bikers coming in big groups, people come many miles around to see it because it is such a lovely display.

“People are remembering more and what is so lovely is that fact that we see a lot of young people and families with children. That is very rewarding.”
