Twinkle-toed Derbyshire couple dance their way to 60 years of happy marriage

Doreen and Gordon Peacock, of Park Avenue, Glapwell, celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday.

Seventy-eight-year-old Doreen said: “We were due to have a big family meal but all that’s been cancelled because of Covid unfortunately.

“Instead the family say they’re going to be bringing us various things throughout the day – including a fish and chip tea – so that will be lovely.”

The pair met as they left Holmewood Miners’ Welfare one day.

“I’d been dancing and Gordon had been playing snooker there,” said Doreen.

“We met on our way out of the venue – I took a fancy to his motorbike!

“I’d definitely say it was love at first sight.”

The dedicated couple got married at Ault Hucknall church.

Gordon, 85, was employed as an overhead crane driver at Chesterfield Tube Works and also worked on the coal board at Williamthorpe Colliery, while Doreen helped to weigh products at Pleasley Mills.

They have three children, Keith, Jane and Wayne, and four grandchildren, Ian, Reece, Lewis and Tom.

Over the years, Doreen and Gordon enjoyed holidaying and sequence dancing.

“Gordon couldn’t dance when we first met so I took him to dance school and he picked it up,” said Doreen.

“Oh, how we loved to dance.”

Asked for the secret to a long and happy marriage, Doreen replied: “We had some fallings-out over the years but we always made up.

“You have to work together.”
