Those who died in pandemic to be commemorated in Selston park refurbishment

Work has already started on improvements at Selston Country Park on the site of the former Selston Golf Club.

The nine-hole club closed five years ago and has fallen into neglect, with its building almost derelict.

Now, phase one of plans to build a memorial park are almost complete. Three flag poles have been erected, raised flower beds almost finished and disabled friendly benches installed alongside a commemorative bench which is already in place.

The country park’s proposals were discussed at a recent full meeting of the Ashfield District Council. Costings are currently underway for a new café hub, including a multipurpose extension to the current building for use by local people. The running of the cafe would eventually be put up for tender.

Mooted park plans also include the development of nature trails, cycle paths, play park and it could host big screen, music and farmers’ market events. A consultation asking the people of Selston, Jacksdale and Underwood for their views over what features the park should include is about to open.

Ashfield District Councillors Arnie Hankin, David Martin and Andy Gascoyne have championed the development.

Councillor Hankin said: “The country park is a green, open space which has not had the care it deserves. The good people of Selston parish want the café reopened, and for the park to be a space they can use and enjoy. We want to hear their views, a public consultation is imminent.

“We hope the park will become a valuable community asset and offer a place to contemplate those who have been lost during the pandemic, those who have fallen in the two Wars and modern conflicts.”

Councillor Gascoyne said: “Councillors Hankin, Martin and myself want to make a difference to the country park. Local people want the café re-opened and they want lovely surroundings for all generations to enjoy”.

Officers are to present costings for the improvements to the council’s cabinet for inclusion in the upcoming budget.

Councillor Martin said: “I want Selston County Park revitalised for local people. If we have learned anything from the pandemic, open spaces are a vital resource”.
