Thoroton Society visits Mansfield Fire Museum and fire station

Mansfield Fire Museum was delighted to welcome members of The Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire for an extended day visit centred around their museum and the history and operational work of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The visit began with a tour of Mansfield Fire Museum, where guests explored the rich heritage and evolution of firefighting in Nottinghamshire and further afield.

Paul Horton, of the museum, commented, “It was a great privilege to host The Thoroton Society, it gave us a chance to share the stories of our past and inspire new generations.

“We really enjoyed them visiting us”

After the museum visit, members enjoyed lunch before an enlightening afternoon presentation at Mansfield Fire Station by Tim Marston from the East Midlands Fire Investigation Dog Unit on the work of the unit.

This was followed by a captivating demonstration featuring Tim and his fire dog Barney.

The fire dog showed his skills after the tiniest amount of accelerant was placed on the fire station drill yard tarmac for the dog to find - which it did in seconds.

The day concluded with a guided look around one of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service’s specialist appliances, Mansfield Fire Station’s aerial ladder platform, one of two stationed in the county.

The Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire is the county’s principal historical and archaeological society. Established in 1897, the society is named in honour of Dr Robert Thoroton, who published the first history of Nottinghamshire in 1677.
